Cocktail Recipe: TOL

After a busy week, sometimes I find the best way to unwind is to mix up a cocktail to combine two of my favourite pastimes – drinking and flavour experimentation. I’ve had a few cocktails recently made with fresh chilli, and thought it was about time to try one out myself.

I thought a base combination of Whisky (I used a nice bottle of The Balvenie 12 year age Double Wood Scotch Whisky), freshly squeezed orange juice and sugar would create a good basis for my drink. I added a slice of fresh red chilli, mixed all together and then topped with ginger ale. The result was a rather resfreshing whiskey cocktail with a nice chilli kick behind it.

I’m not very creative with cocktail names, so I decided to call this TOL (after Taste of Leicester)

TOL Whisky Cocktail

TOL Whisky Cocktail

Ingredients:
2 shots Single Malt Scotch Whisky
3 shots freshly squeezed orange juice
2 teaspoons caster sugar
slice of half a red chilli (deseeded)
top with: ginger ale

Method:
Muddle the chilli slice in your cocktail shaker, and the Whiskey, orange juice and sugar and then shake for 5 seconds. Strain into a tumbler filled with ice and then top with ginger ale. Add a small chilli and a slice of orange to decorate.

Little Tokyo Restaurant, Braunstone Gate

Little Tokyo is one of Leicester’s hidden gems. Outside of Wagamama and Yo Sushi! Leicester is severely lacking in restaurants catering for those looking for a great Japanese meal. Little Tokyo is Leicester’s only independently run Japanese restaurant. It’s a very small restaurant, but it always has a cosey feel, with staff always very welcoming to both Little Tokyo regulars and newcomers.

We decided to sample a selection of the starters to begin with, starting with Ebi Tempura (£4.95) – a lightly battered and fried king prawn dish. The batter was indeed very light but crunchy, delicious in fact and served with a sweet chilli sauce dip. I also opted for the Nasu Dengaku (£3.95), which is fried aubergine topped with a miso sauce sweetened with sugar and mirin (a sweetened Japanese rice wine). As a recently discoverer of how great aubergine can taste in Japanese and Chinese food, this was a real treat for me. The soft texture of the aubergine together with the sweet and savoury combination of the sauce was very pleasing on the mouth.

For my main dish I decided to go for the Korean Hot Pepper Squid (£7.95) with Boiled Rice (£1.95). Whilst I have had this dish before at Little Tokyo, I was really in the mood for a spicy dish with lots of flavour – I wasn’t disappointed. This flavoursome dish of fried squid also contains sliced fresh pepper and onion and is definitely a dish for those that like things a little more spicy.

It wouldn’t be a Japanese restaurant without a vast Sushi menu, so we decided to try a selection of Little Tokyo’s finest sushi to finish our meal. The first type of sushi we tried was the Nigiri, a formed rectangular mound of rice topped with a slice of fish, usually raw. The nigiri we tried was topped with tuna, salmon and prawn (Ebi) – a classic and tasty combination! I also tried the Nigiri Tobiko, which rice topped with flying fish roe. It’s something I had never tried before but was quite a delicacy and well worth a try if you’re feeling a little adventurous. Our favourite though, was the Ebi Tempura (fried prawn) Makimono. The crispy tempura battered prawns are wrapped in a blanket of sushi rice and nori (seaweed) creating a great fusion of sublime tastes and textures. Little Tokyo’s sushi selection was a real treat and some of the best sushi I have ever tried.

Overall we had a great experience at Little Tokyo. The combination of the small, quirky location, very helpful and friendly staff and the closest thing to authentic japanese food you can find in Leicester makes this little restaurant well worth a visit or two.

Żubrówka at Maiyango, St Nicholas Place

Last week I took my friends to the Maiyango restaurant in the city center, situituated on 3-21 St Nicholas Place. The restaurant has a Moroccan style with a warm and cosy environment. The service is excellent and the staff are very attentive. The drinks are great – Maiyango is well known as a top cocktail bar in Leicester, and you can enjoy these at the bar or throughout a meal if you wish. Maiyango is one of the best places to eat in Leicester, but this time we decided try only the cocktails as we were not hungry. As I am Polish I easily persuaded my friends to try Żubrówka with apple juice, my favourite Polish cocktail. In Poland, people call this cocktail Tatanka or Szarlotka. You HAVE to try it!

Żubrówka is not just any polish vodka. Known in Poland since the 17th century this is a brand of dry, herb-flavoured vodka that is distilled from rye and bottled at 40% alcohol. Its flavour is unique and is described as having woodruff, vanilla, coconut, and almond notes. This grass grows in the Białowieża Forest (which is partly in Poland and partly in Belarus) and elsewhere. A blade of buffalo grass is placed in each bottle of Żubrówka, presenting the vodka in a unique and eye-catching way. While this single of grass is there mostly for visual purposes, in mass production alcohol is infused with bulk amount of grass in order to obtain the vodka’s unique taste and green-yellow tint. The name Żubrówka comes from żubr, the Polish word for the Bison, which is particularly fond of eating buffalo grass.

So we had great evening in Mayango, and this is a place we will visit in the very near future again.

Eataway, Church Gate Leicester

Last Wednesday my friend and I headed into the city to Eataway, one of my favorite Chinese buffetts for a dinner. This is a place you can visit regularly and enjoy nice food at sensible prices. The staff are always friendly, quick to serve drinks and invite you to help yourself to the buffet which is nice. Actually, one thing I love about buffets is the fact that you don’t have to wait for the chef to cook your food, if you’re starving you can be eating in minutes!

There is a good range of traditional Chinese food including, crispy duck pancakes, fried rice, sweet and sour chicken, pork, beef, various seafood dishes, as well as a selection of sushi ,so there is something for everyone. This time I tried salt and pepper king prawns and as a real prawn fan can say one thing – it was absolutely delicious!

We’ll certainly be visiting this place again!

Business Cards have Arrived!

Things are moving along briskly here, we now have our own very nice and clean looking business cards. Hopefully we can start making ourselves known now in the great city of Leicester. Keep an eye out for us tonight, we will be heading to the Cultural Quarter and the launch night of Manhattan34 cocktail bar!

Manhattan34 Bar – Pre Launch

As mentioned in one of our previous updates, Manhattan34 is the latest addition to Leicester’s stylish Cultural Quarter. Within a minutes walking distance from The Curve, Manhattan34 brings a touch of class and a fresh atmosphere to Leicester’s busy bar scene.

Whilst not officially open, it didn’t stop curious passers buy (including ourselves) from taking a look inside. The decor is a mixture of exposed bricks and tiles with a retro-modern twist. A feature wall explains the significance of the date of 1934, the year when cocktails became part of everyday lifestyle in USA.

On the subject of cocktails, this is where Manhattan34 really carves its niche. Many of the delicacies on the luxuriously printed black and white menus are quite unique. Whilst fusions of premium spirits with such adventurous flavourings as fresh coriander, basil and various pepper and chillies, you are sure to set your tastebuds alive on sampling the drinks. One definitely worth checking out is the Blood Sugar Sex Magic – a devious mixture combining Bourbon, fresh chilli and Agave nectar. This was so good that I had to go back for another!

We had a chance to speak briefly to co-owner Roop Kahlon, who explained that his combined 25 years of experience with business partner Chris had given them the platform to open their own dream bar.

Manhattan34 officially opens its doors with a launch part this Saturday 17th September from 7pm onwards. We will be there sampling more drinks and talking to visitors about their thoughts on this stylish and promising bar.

Taste of Leicester Project Update

We had a good meeting tonight to discuss the future of the project. Whilst the basic structure of the website is in place, our goal now is to keep on bringing new and interesting content about quality venues for food and drink in Leicester.

As well as the usual mid-week tour of the city we stopped off at The Slug and Lettuce for a bite to eat, a few 2-4-1 cocktails, and a chance to sit down and discuss the next steps for our project. It’s going to start getting very interesting soon with the ultimate goal being the first issue of our printed magazine.

Watch this space and expect more updates to follow soon!

The Almanack, Highcross

One of my favourite places for a relaxing drink or some classic british food in the Highcross is The Almanack. The Almanack brings the modern gastro-pub to Leicester, offering a very stylish and welcoming venue, some great drinks and even better food.

Today we chose The Almanack as a venue for our weekly meeting thanks to their generous offering of free wifi access and a relaxing atmosphere. To help get the creative juices flowing we sampled their tequilla shots and hot drinks – the coffee comes impressive served not only with sugar and milk, but also with smarties! The cocktail menu, whilst a relatively short, features enough variety to tempt you. As it was pink Thursday (a weekly event at The Almack where all pink drinks are half price), we opted for a French Martini. A classic mixture of vodka, pineapple juice and raspberry liqueur capably mixed by our barman.

Whilst we weren’t there to review the food, that didn’t stop me from sampling one of The Almanack’s lighter meals. I went for the free-range Crispy Duck, Coconut, Coriander & Spring Onion Salad. Whilst not particularly cheap for a salad (£13.00 for the larger version I tried), the salad had a very generous portion of delicious crispy duck. The salad, mostly comprising of long shavings of carrot and mooli with salad greens was delicately dressed with light coconut and coriander flavours. Simply one of the best salads I have had in Leicester.

We will be sure to visit The Almanack again in the near future for the gastronomic experience – be sure to check back regularly!
